Henry VIII’s iconic warship the Mary-Rose was lost during a battle against the French in the waters off Portsmouth in 1545. Tragically, the ship capsized and sank while close to shore, taking 500 men to their deaths.

Some people swear by coffee. For me, nothing resets my brain like calm water or a walk outside in nature.

Standing on a dock in my native England, I was appreciating the view and the real English ale I had just consumed in a traditional waterside pub. 

Running and walking outside always help the ideas flow. My favourite run is Not Since Moses, coming up August 14, when participants run or walk on the ocean floor. If you can be in Nova Scotia in August, I’d recommend being there!

I’m fascinated by the relationship of humanity to nature. When I was young, we moved all the time – my dad was in the military and we moved to a new base every 18 months. All those military bases were located in the British countryside and, in the absence of other forms of continuity, nature became like a best friend.
